Race Day Check List

When: 

Ruck anytime from Friday, September 11, 2020 12:01AM to Sunday, September 13, 2020 by 11:59PM EST.  This is a virtual event and all ruckers by participating agree to the Tough Ruck 2020 Virtual Waiver

Where: 

We encourage Tough Ruckers to ruck in their own communities.  Help us be good neighbors! Please make sure you are following health, safety, face covering, social distancing and other guidelines of the community you are rucking in.  If you do ruck with groups, please practice safe social distancing guidelines. All Ruckers will be taking part at their own risk – check out the liability waiver on your registration form for details.  Please do not use the original Tough Ruck course for your ruck, please find a new course for 2020. Our friends at Minuteman National Park have asked us to remind Ruckers that the trails in many places do not allow for groups to social distance.


 

Guidelines to Earn Your Official Boston Marathon Medal:

  • All Ruckers must be officially registered for the Virtual Tough Ruck and complete their fundraising minimum.  Your must be at least 18 on race day to participate.
  • The 26.2 mile distance must be completed in one time period on either September 11, 12, or 13, 2020.
  • All Ruckers must complete a 26.2 mile course in one continuous ruck.  We do anticipate that Ruckers will stop to hydrate, fuel, rest, change socks etc.  We encourage Ruckers to set a goal to complete the course within 10 hours.  If time is above 10 hours it may not appear in the Tough Ruck official results however you can still earn your medal. Keep rucking on!
  • All Ruckers must wear a ruck sack on their backs weighing a minimum of 15 pounds throughout the enter distance. Weighted vests cannot be used a substitute for a ruck.
  • All Ruckers must submit all of the following to be eligible to receive a medal. Your Tough Ruck Finishers Survey must be completed by 12:00 PM EST on 9/14/2020.
    • A photo of your individual GPS showing the completed distance of 26.2 and time.   Each Rucker must wear their own individual tracking device. We encourage you to test out your mapping app prior. We also strongly encourage you to bring an external charger for your phone. Medals cannot be awarded without photo proof of completed time and distance.  There are no exceptions to this policy.
    • A photo of you at your start and finish with your race bib.  Please note we will not be able to accept any video files or “live photo” files via this form.

Medal Distribution:

Medals will be mailed to the address listed in your registration via certified mail after verification of the above requirements, within 30 days after the Virtual Tough Ruck.  If your medal is lost, it can not be replaced.

Bib Pick-Up:

Your bib will be mailed prior to the event.

General Q & A:

(Q) What happens to the money I already fundraised for the Tough Ruck?
(A) All fundraising for the Virtual Ruck is a continuation of your current Tough Ruck fundraising.

(Q) How do I enter the virtual Tough Ruck?
(A) All registered Tough Ruck 2020 participants received a email with your registration link. The registration fee is $24.99 for the Virtual Tough Ruck 2020 and each Rucker must raise a minimum of $450 by August 13.  Registration for new ruckers will open July 11, 2020.

(Q) I registered for Tough Ruck, but do not wish to participate in the virtual event. How do I request a refund of my entry fee for the 2020 Tough Ruck?
(A) All April 2020 Tough Ruck entrants may use this link to request a full refund of their entry fee.

(Q) Am I still required to meet my fundraising commitment if I have requested a refund of my registration fee and do not want to take part in the Tough Ruck Virtual Experience?
(A) Fundraising commitments will be waived if you elect not to participate and you will not be charged on your credit card.

(Q) I already requested a refund of my registration fee, am I still eligible to complete the Tough Ruck Virtual Experience?
(A) Yes!  All participants who were originally entered in the Tough Ruck originally scheduled for April 19, 2020 are eligible to participate in the virtual Tough Ruck. This includes entrants who had previously opted for a registration refund prior to this announcement.

(Q) Do I need to submit a map of my planned route for the Virtual Tough Ruck? How do I submit proof of my Tough Ruck?
(A) You do not need to submit your planned route for approval prior to the ruck. Each individual Rucker is responsible for planning their route.

(Q) How do I submit proof of my Tough Ruck?
(A) Each Rucker must submit a photo of their individual GPS showing the map of a completed distance of 26.2 miles and the Time to complete the Ruck. Each Rucker must wear their own individual GPS tracking device, even if you are rucking as part of a small group. We also strongly encourage you to bring an external charger for your phone. Medals cannot be awarded without photo proof of completed time and distance.  There are no exceptions to this policy.

(Q) Is there a fundraising minimum for the Virtual Tough Ruck?
(A) The fundraising minimum is $450.

(Q) Why can’t I defer my entry until Tough Ruck 2021?
(A) The field size for the April 2021 Tough Ruck has not yet been set, and it will need to take into account guidelines and regulations for large scale events that have yet to be established.

(Q) I was not registered for the April 2020 Tough Ruck but I would like to complete the Virtual Tough Ruck.  Am I able to register for the Virtual Tough Ruck?
(A) Yes.  Limited bibs will be available and registration will open 6AM on July 11, 2020.

(Q) What dates can I take part in the Virtual Tough Ruck?
(A) You can complete your marathon distance on September 11th, September 12th or  September 13th 2020 only.

(Q) What weight divisions are there?
(A) Integrity Check. For the Virtual Tough Ruck, each Rucker will be asked to submit the weigh of their ruck sack in the online medal form. All Ruckers must carry a minimum of 15 pounds in their ruck sack throughout the entire Virtual Tough Ruck. Lightweight Division is 15 pounds+ and Heavy Division is 30 pounds+.

(Q) How can I participate in the 2020 Tough Ruck? 
(A) Due to the changing and developing COVID-19 situation, we are making a change to the participation options for Tough Ruck 2020.  In parallel with the Boston Marathon procedure, Ruckers may choose to participate in the Virtual event on September 11th, 12th, or 13th, 2020 or cancel their registration for the event. All participants may select to receive a refund of their registration fee for the amount of the fee originally paid or may choose to donate the registration fee to Military Friends Foundation by completing this form.

(Q) How old do you have to be to participate in the Tough Ruck Virtual Experience?
(A) Due to the duration and intense physical challenge, you must be at least 18 years old to take part in the 26.2 mile Virtual Tough Ruck.  Each Rucker will need to provide date of birth on your registration form.  Any Rucker found providing a false information during registration, including date of birth will be disqualified and unable to participate in any Tough Ruck event in the future.

(Q) Is the fundraising deadline still in place?
(A) The fundraising deadline for Tough Ruck 2020 has been rescheduled from April 1, 2020 until August 13, 2020 for the Virtual Tough Ruck 2020.

(Q) I want to participate in September.  Can I still earn additional swag above my fundraising level?
(A) The new fundraising deadline to earn swag above my fundraising level is July 13th.  Example: If you registered to raise $950 and you raise $1500 by July 13th you can earn the official Boston Marathon jacket. If you reach a new level of swag, email info@toughruck.org subject line: Swag. Please include your full name as registered, phone number, and sweatshirt and/or jacket size.

(Q) I signed up in April for the $950/$1500 fundraising option.  COVID has made it hard for me to meet my commitment. Am I able to change to the minimum for the Virtual Tough Ruck?
(A) Yes! Participants who wish to complete the Virtual Tough Ruck at a lower fundraising option than originally signed up for will be given the one time option to downgrade when completing the Virtual Tough Ruck participant sign up form.  All Ruckers must raise a minimum of $450.

(Q) What will I receive if I finish the virtual Tough Ruck and meet the fundraising minimum?
(A) All Ruckers who complete the virtual Tough Ruck and fundraise a minimum of $450 will receive the Tough Ruck 2020 Bib, Long Sleeve Tech Shirt, Participation Certificate (electronic) and Patch.  Finishers who complete the Tough Ruck and follow the guidelines for proof of completion will also receive the official Boston Marathon Finishers Medal.  This will be mailed out following the event.

(Q) Is there an opportunity to earn additional items through fundraising?
(A) YES! Participants who choose to fundraise beyond the minimum can earn the Tough Ruck sweatshirt by raising $950 and the Boston Marathon/Tough Ruck Jacket by raising $1500 by July 13, 2020.

(Q) Can I complete the 26.2 miles over multiple days?
(A) No. Participants are required to complete the 26.2 marathon distance continuously, on the same day. Participants must submit one photo of their individual GPS showing the map of a completed distance of 26.2 miles and the Time to complete the Ruck.

(Q) What happens to the money I already fundraised for the Tough Ruck?
(A) All fundraising for the Virtual Ruck is a continuation of your current Tough Ruck fundraising.

(Q) I already met my fundraising goal for the 2020 Tough Ruck. Do I need to raise an additional $450 for the Virtual Ruck?
(A) Congratulations on crushing your 2020 Tough Ruck fundraising commitment. No, You do not need to complete any additional fundraising if you have already raised your 2020 fundraising commitment. All fundraising for the Virtual Ruck is a continuation of your current 2020 Tough Ruck fundraising.

(Q) How do I raise my Fundraising commitment for the Virtual Tough Ruck?
(A) Current registered Tough Ruck participants will continue to fundraise on their existing 2020 Tough Ruck GoFundMe page and the minimum fundraising commitments for the Virtual Tough Ruck will be a continuation of your current Tough Ruck fundraising.

(Q) I have a donation in the form of a check, Can this be added to my online fundraising?
(A) Yes. Checks must include the name of the Rucker on the check in order to be credited to your fundraiser. Please make checks payable to: Military Friends Foundation, 6 Beacon Street Suite 200, Boston, MA 02108. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Checks may take up to 3 weeks from when they are received to be credited to your account.  All checks must be received by July 23, 2020 in order to be credited onto your fundraising total before the deadline. We are unable to credit any funds until they are received, this includes any corporate donation matching.  Matching donations may not be counted towards the fundraising minimum if they are not received by the deadline.

(Q) I set up a fundraiser through another site, does that count towards my fundraising goal?
(A) We are only able to track and count fundraising done through the Tough Ruck official fundraising site at www.crowdrise.org/toughruck2020 (April 2020 registered Ruckers) or (New Participants).  If you have raised funds elsewhere you will need to make a donation to your page yourself to transfer these funds in order for them to appear on your official Tough Ruck fundraising page. In the event the other fundraiser will send the funds directly to Military Friends Foundation they will not be able to be credited to your account until after the funds have been received, please see the above question about check donations for more info.
